Biography

Christopher Nicholson

Christopher is a scientifically trained visual artist.


In his 40-year career to date, with the last 33 years spent as a Writer/Director, his professional output includes films (in standard 2D, 3D, Virtual Production and Virtual Reality), cinema and TV commercials, documentaries, live TV Gallery directing (including news, current affairs, sport and daytime TV), experimental productions, music videos and live events.


Technically skilled, highly creative and always delivering on schedule, on budget, and on brief, as a Director he has shot extensively in the UK, USA, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and Hungary and as a Writer has been commissioned to write for both the Western and non-Western markets, including China and Bollywood.


He is also Associate Professor Convergent Media at the University for the Creative Arts in Surrey, UK with his remit including:

  • Exploration of artistic convergence and creative innovation, disruptive use of current technologies and workflows to discover new opportunities for the future of Media creation.
  • Establishment of new collaborations with the Industry, the Academia and Public Institutions for cross-field Research.
  • Enabler of Industry-focused learning experiences to provide UCA students with the highest quality professional awareness and academic knowledge.

Originally from London, Christopher now splits his time between London, and  Los Angeles.


A Durham University graduate from the faculties of Psychology and Music specialising in visual perception and psychoacoustics, he started his career at the BBC, moved to ITV, left to run a production company for 7 years directing commercials for clients including British Airway, Guinness, Shell, Mercedes, Volvo, Unilever and Procter & Gamble before deciding to become fully freelance as a Writer/Director specialising in narrative fiction.


With the reputation of being an early-adopter, Christopher has often collaborated with key Industry stakeholders to test, experiment, acquire new knowledge and advance innovation.


Offered the opportunity to fund the development of his own experimental transmedia production, "BlindSight", by a major Hollywood Studio, Christopher recently relocated to Los Angeles for two years of detailed research, development and testing where he collaborated with ARRI research in Munich, RED research in Hollywood, DNeg, Pinewood, Zeiss, Leica, Canon, FujiFilm, Pacific Motion Control, Mark Roberts Motion Control and Sennheiser.


Christopher designed and developed a new 3D filmmaking process called NVE®, Natural Viewing Experience, supported by BBC, 3Aality, Sony, Panavision, Panalux, and Molinare and presented at Warner Brothers in Burbank.


He recently developed a new style of narrative presentation called Virtual Theatre, specifically for dramatic work in the VR space.

Christopher boasts a number of industry firsts:

 

  • First in the UK to create a cinema commercial digitally in association with Sony.
  • First to create a commercial that incorporated live action footage in a Virtual Studio in association with Molinare.
  • First to create a narrative drama with Vision 2 T-Grain film stock in association with Kodak.
  • First to shoot a music video using a prototype RED One camera.
  • First totally uncompressed camera test of Sony’s 4K experimental camera system in association with Oscar-winning DoP.
  • First to shoot a demonstration film of the Sony flagship F65 camera in association with the Sony Digital Motion Picture Centre and Pinewood Studios.
  • First to shoot a project with cameras running at a wide range of various frame rates successfully in a Virtual Production Studio.
  • First Director in the UK to hold workshops on screen acting for actors wishing to explore the Meisner Technique.


Christopher has been the Creative Director and Executive Producer of a number of charity projects including nationwide cinema and TV campaigns for Crisis and Marie Curie Cancer Care. 


Passionate about passing on his training and experience to the younger generation, Christopher has been a Guest Lecturer at a number of universities, film and drama schools, regularly holds classes in both screen acting and filmmaking as well as mentoring young professionals and students.

Facilities he has spoken at include Bournemouth University, Arts Ed, The Arts Institute, LAMDA, The Actor's Temple, The Actor's Centre, Central London School of Dramatic Art, International School of Screen Acting, Mountview, IDSA, the University of Winchester, the University of Bedfordshire and the University for the Creative Arts.


For a number of years, Christopher was one of the organisers and a jury member at the Kodak Student Film Awards.


Well-versed in a wide variety of acting techniques, he has successfully guided many an actor in their transition from stage to screen and also successfully mentored a number of film and drama students both in the UK and the US.  


Christopher is an active member of the Screen-Actor's specialist tutor group "Acting2Camera".


At the age of 11, Christopher was cast in the BBC TV production of SMIKE and as a teenager, was a member of The Young Vic Theatre.


Christopher is is also an accomplished photographer.  He built his first camera when he was 7, sold his first photograph at the age of 10, has exhibited his photographic work in both the UK and in Italy and has been commissioned by clients including Intimissimi and  Calzedonia for the Italian market.


Awards

Christopher's work with disadvantaged teenagers from the Prince’s Trust and members of the BAME community wishing to work in Film and TV resulted in him receiving a personal commendation from the then HRH Prince Charles, now King Charles III.


Professional Memberships

Christopher is a Full Member of Directors UK. He was also a Board Member and Trustee of the Directors Guild of Great Britain and instrumental in its merger with Directors UK, was a Board and founding Member of the Directors Charitable Foundation and a former Board Member of the Directors Guild Trust
